Week 4 – MBA 6601 – Developing Good Habits to Adapt Changes in Business Trends

(OpenAI, 2024)

In “Surfing the Tsunami,” Kelsey (2018), defines adapt as trying to learn and grow in what interests you, while you keep an eye on current trends in the world (p.77-79). Currently, artificial intelligence and machine learning are trending, and many organizations, professionals, and entrepreneurs are keeping an eye on it to learn more about it as it is being developed. However, watching current trends and new developments in your profession is also very important to keep an eye on. We must know about new methods or tools that can be used in our work. The world is constantly changing, and as the world changes so does the way we work on tasks. Becoming efficient and learning new skills and methods to solve problems is becoming more important than ever before.

Balancing our personal and work life can be a difficult thing to do. Which is why it is important to start developing good habits right now. We do not need to make drastic changes right away, we can take one step up at a time, so these habits can stay. However, if you are impulsive and cannot help it make drastic changes. Remember it is okay to fail to have changes to stick, but make sure you reflect as to why the good habits you tried to make failed and learn from it. Hopefully, from your reflection, you learn what steps can be taken differently and how you should approach them when you start developing your good habits. How can we start developing good habits? There are many methods we can use.

To start developing good habits, an individual can start with small changes. The reason for this is that big changes need high levels of motivation, but this cannot be sustained in the long term (Fogg, 2019, as cited in Parker-Pope, 2020). When it comes to watching business trends, Kelsey (2018) suggests starting with articles that you can find by using Google, such as the BBC News and New York Times articles (p. 84-85). Since we are starting small, we can begin reading an article or two a week. This is to get the habit started. With this habit not being frequent, it is important to set up reminders to search for trends in the field you are in or interested in. Kelsey (2018) suggested using Google Calendar to set up these reminders, as you can have these reminders appear weekly (p. 80). However, keep in mind that these habits need to grow bigger eventually, so you can have time to dig deeper into things you find interesting.

Another method that can be used is developing good habits by creating a time slot schedule. I used this back in 2021 but stopped due to personal reasons. However, I have restarted using this method to build good habits once again. Creating a time slot schedule is super easy and all you need is Excel (Google or Microsoft works fine). You can set up the time slot increments by an hour, 30 minutes, 15 minutes, or five minutes. Whatever works best for your schedule. With this, you can dedicate certain tasks to be started and completed at certain times, but it also allows you to know if you can fit something into your schedule. For example, if you want to exercise, you will need to see if you can fit that in your schedule or if need to reduce tasks/free time to add it. Combining with the previous method, starting small, you dedicate 15 or 30 minutes of your schedule to build good habits and have it become your daily routine. This method also forces you to prioritize what habits you want to build and want to be in your daily life.

Of course, there are not all possible methods to build good habits, but is a good place to start developing them. This is especially true if you work in a competitive industry where companies do not invest in training their employees. It is very important to be informed about new business trends, such as AI, machine learning, new business methods, and market changes. In a competitive market, changes are frequently being made to be ahead of the competition. If cannot keep to the trends or ignore them, you may find yourself out of a job. It is our responsibility to keep learning new skills and gain knowledge to be seen as an asset to the company we work for. Kelsey (2019) said, “Don’t get comfortable” (p. 79). The moment you get comfortable, there is a chance you will stagnate and fall behind competitors. Start developing your habits and start reading trends that can affect your career, such as AI, machine learning, and your profession field.
