Week 7 – MBA 6601 – Different Perspective of AI

(OpenAI, 2024)

There are many different perspectives on AI, many individuals believe AI could be dangerous to humanity, but there are also many individuals believing that AI can be beneficial to humanity. It is important to understand both sides to come up with our conclusions if AI will be beneficial or dangerous to humanity. Perrigo (2024) reported that there is a possibility AI poses an extinction-level threat to humanity due to how companies prioritize the speed of safety of AI and AGI. This perspective focuses on the ethics that companies have, which is very understandable. If a company is not consistent in behaving ethically and ensuring safety nets are in place for AI, there is a chance that companies can misuse it. For example, Perrigo (2024) suggested that Congress should make it illegal for AI to learn certain levels of computing and use open sources because without guidelines could lead to destabilizing global security. The lack of safety nets could lead to issues that humanity has never seen.

However, if this is too sci-fi thinking scenario, we can look at Maria Ressa's perspective of AI. Maria believes that since AI needs a lot of information to work, she believes that the government and companies can use AI to spread misinformation, citing what happened with the 2016 US elections misinformation (Bennett & Cuevas, 2023). There are so many different negative perspectives, including job loss that will occur from fully adopting AI into business. It is important to understand this perspective, so we can find a way to protect individuals and ensure they are not being taken advantage of, as well as protect the sovereignty of government.

When it comes to understanding AI, we also need to look at the positive perspective of AI. Looking at healthcare industries, AI has the capability of developing a lifecycle framework for healthcare, allowing doctors to receive accurate and appropriate recommendations to treat individuals (Tazbaz, 2024). However, this requires AI to access individuals’ information to analyze their records and provide proper medication/treatment to patients. AI is a tool that can be used to help doctors save lives and prevent diseases from spreading to one’s health. Another industry that can use AI to assist them is logistics and warehouse management.

According to Peterson, (2024), warehouse management faces constant fluctuations in inventory levels, making it difficult to keep up with changes due to the rigid structures of warehouse management. AI will be able to keep track of all of this, allowing companies to follow just in time (JIT) model. However, it can also allow companies to strategically keep track of what warehouse has the necessary materials for a manufacturer to produce a product. AI can determine the level of materials in each warehouse and assign those materials to be shipped to specific manufacturers, so products can be produced cheaply and to the nearest market it will sell to. AI has many benefits that can be used to increase companies’ capabilities, while also making operations not so costly. Of course, it is up to the individual to come to their conclusion if it is beneficial for humanity to use AI in all or certain industries, as well as in our daily lives. I believe it would be more beneficial for humanity, as AI can help us become more efficient with our work. However, it is also important to know about the negative perspective of AI because those are valid reasons to be hesitant to adopt AI fully. By acknowledging these concerns, we can ensure that AI is being used properly and figure out a way to help those affected by AI.
