Week 5 – MBA 6601 – Rebranding: Where do I see Myself in Five Years?
(OpenAI, 2024)
“Where do you see yourself in five
years?” can be the most difficult question for anyone to answer. This could be
because no one truly knows what they want to do. I was in the same
position as many people are of not knowing where they see themselves in five
years. When my professor asked me this question, he reframed the question as,
“Look at your LinkedIn page and imagine it as your brand/loge, what do you want
to see on there and be at in five years?” I have been telling myself that I
want to start my own business for the past 10 years. I want to be rebranded as
an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and expert in various things that interest me.
However, before I can rebrand
myself, I need to reinvent myself. If I want to rebrand myself as an
entrepreneur, philanthropist, and expert in various things. There are a lot of
things that I need to change about myself to be able to align my actions with
my brand. There are many ways one can reinvent oneself, such as reflecting on
one’s past, developing an action plan, learning new skills, adopting good
habits, and adapting to the world (Robinson, 2024). The first step I need to
take to reinvent myself is to reflect on the last several years of my career to
see if I’m satisfied with the progression of my career. It is important to
remember that when reflecting on your past, you should not dwell on it, but
learn from it (Robinson, 2024). This is a good exercise to help know your
identity and what you want to stand for. With how my career has been
progressing, I will be honest, I’m not satisfied with the direction I’m heading
towards. To pivot my career, I must create goals and objectives I want to
achieve within the next five years, and then develop an action plan to achieve
them (Robinson, 2024). In my case, I want to be an expert in various things
that interest me. To be an expert in a field I’m interested in, I must gain the
knowledge and skills that are needed to be an expert in the field, as well as
keep up with new trends, news, and developments that are happening in the
field. It is also important to develop good habits that will keep researching
and looking for new methods of staying ahead of your competitors. The reason
one should make plans to develop these skills, habits, and gained knowledge is
because the world is constantly changing, and new methods are being developed.
To stay competitive, you must acquire new skills and knowledge to have a competitive
advantage over your competitors (Robinson, 2024).
It is also important when
reinventing yourself, that you are consistent with what you are trying to
achieve and looking back at your goals. This is important because if fail to
stay consistent, other people will not take you seriously, and this could affect
your brand. By being consistent with the changes, you are trying to make in
your life, you can use these changes to market yourself. It will take time to
gain the experience you need, but once you have experience in the fields you
are interested in you can reintroduce yourself by leveraging your experience to
set you apart from others and create a coherent narrative of your brand (Clark,
2021). This will be a great way to rebrand yourself to what you want to be
known for. Remember, for this to come true, one needs to develop an action plan
and follow through with it so one can have control over one’s career.
