Week 7 – MBA 6601 – What are Social Media Trends and How can Business use it to their Advantage?
(OpenAI, 2024)
Social
media trends are defined as the constant changing of behavior and topics on
social media (What are social media trends?, n.d.). One may ask why it
is important to know what social media trends are. One reason is that many
people spend time on their phones, accessing websites like Facebook, Instagram,
and X (formerly known as Twitter). On average, US citizens spend around 3 hours
on their phones, and about 52 percent of those people are using their social
media (Howarth, 2024). Figuring out where your target audience spends most of
their time can help businesses determine their marketing strategy.
Advertising on TikTok is completely different from how you would
advertise on Facebook, YouTube, and X. Each platform has a wide audience and
spread messages/advertisements quickly on each platform (What are social
media trends?, n.d.). Of course, you can place a regular advertisement that
fits on each platform, but depending on your audience it may not get their
attention. Companies will need to tailor their marketing strategy to fit each
platform. For example, on Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok a company can use video
advertisement on them, but the length of the video will vary. For TikTok
videos, it is recommended to have video lengths between 21 to 34 seconds videos
(Innis, 2024). It would be wise to create videos that last around the
recommended video length.
The
content of the advertisement is important to note. It would be wise to follow
what is trending on each platform. A company should understand the trend before
hopping on and participating in the trend at the right time, however, it is
also important that companies make their variation of the trend (What are
social media trends?, n.d.). Companies that hop on trends before doing
research can be seen as disingenuous or viewed as not authentic. It is
important to have an understanding of your audience to ensure the right message
is being sent out to potential consumers when hopping on trends they will like.
It is also important that you add your twist to the trend, so it doesn’t look
like your company is only hopping on the trends to make quick sales. Keep in
mind when creating your advertisement for a trend, you need to act quickly because
it is unknown how long the trend will last. This is especially true with
TikTok, videos on the platform are short and the trend may only last less than
a week. Companies need to time their advertisement; and ensure they are
releasing them when the trend is at its highest popularity. Keep in mind that
companies do not need to hop on every trend, make sure that the trend aligns
with your company's identity. These trends are important to business success
for product launch since they allow products/services to be visible to a larger
audience, connect and engage with your audience, and make your brand more
visible (What are social media trends?, n.d.).
